07/06/2008 - (Baseball Betting) - The Philadelphia Phillies will try to rebound from last night's loss when they resume a four-game set Sunday with the NL East-rival New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies had their four-game winning streak halted after Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Mets in the second installment of this series. Ryan Howard belted a three-run homer for the Phillies, who were outhit 14-4 for the game and remained 3 1/2 games ahead of Florida in the NL East. New York is now 4 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the standings.
J.C. Romero suffered the loss in relief, yielding two runs in one-third of an inning. Starter Jamie Moyer held the Mets to three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 frames in the no-decision.
Kyle Kendrick will try to pitch life back into the Phillies when he takes the mound on Sunday afternoon, Kendrick has been a pleasant surprise in Philly's rotation, having won two straight starts and seven of the last eight decisions.
Kendrick won his previous outing on Tuesday at Atlanta after allowing three runs and seven hits through six innings of an 8-3 win. Kendrick is 8-3 with a 4.58 ERA in 17 starts this season for the Phillies, who are 12-2 in Kendrick's previous 14 outings.
The righty is 1-1 with a 3.00 earned run average in two career starts against the Mets.
In team news for the Phillies, the club signed closer Brad Lidge to a three- year contract extension. The deal, which is worth $37.5 million, includes a 2012 club option and performance incentives. Lidge is sporting an 0.77 ERA and 19 saves in 35 games this season, his first as a Phillie.
New York has alternated wins and losses over its last eight games. In Saturday's five-run victory in South Philly, Damion Easley went 3-for-5 and knocked in a run, while Brian Schneider's two-run, pinch-hit double in the eighth inning proved to be the difference.
Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado each went 2-for-5 for the Mets. Pedro Feliciano earned the win despite recording just one out in relief of starter John Maine, who allowed three runs on just one hit in 5 2/3 innings before exiting early with an apparent forearm injury.
Left-hander Oliver Perez will take the hill for the Mets on Sunday, and he is 6-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 17 starts this season. Perez is 2-1 in his last three decisions, recording the win over the New York Yankees on June 29 in a 3-1 victory at Shea Stadium.
Perez held the Yankees to one run and three hits in seven innings, and posted eight strikeouts with no walks. He is 2-3 with a 3.83 earned run average in 10 career starts against the Phillies.
The Mets are 5-3 against the Phillies this season.

The Major League Baseball season starts this weekend and MySportsbook.com, a leading online sportsbook for over 8 years, is the first to offer baseball sports betting lines on who will win the 2007 World Series.
"The World Series is the biggest baseball event in the sports betting world and MySportsbook.com is excited that we are first to market with betting lines on every team," says Tim Dalton, Marketing Director, MySportsbook.com. "We are getting things ready for a great baseball season and our members are looking forward to our Player Payback Bonuses, as well as Dime Lines, all season long."
Going in to this weekend, MySportsbook.com's favorites to win the World Series are the New York Yankees at 7-2 and last year’s winners the Chicago White Sox at 9-2.
"These betting lines are ripe for the picking," Dalton added, "baseball fans know that the season is long and many factors, including players staying healthy, will affect these Future odds as the baseball season progresses. Betting on your favorite team in the beginning of the season could prove quite lucrative. We are seeing examples of this right now in the NCAA College Basketball Tournament with a lucky few that placed pre-season bets on George Mason to win it all. Anything can happen."

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
